Celebrating Jubilee 2025 |
Peregrinantes in Spem Jubilee 2025 was proclaimed by Pope Francis in the Papal Bull Spes Non Confundit (“Hope does not disappoint”). “The coming Jubilee will thus be a Holy Year marked by the hope that does not fade, our hope in God. May it help us to recover the confident trust that we require, in the Church and in society, in our interpersonal relationships, in international relations, and in our task of promoting the dignity of all persons and respect for God’s gift of creation.” (Pope Francis, Spes Non Confundit 25) “We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision. The forthcoming Jubilee can contribute greatly to restoring a climate of hope and trust as a prelude to the renewal and rebirth we so urgently desire; that is why I have chosen as the motto of the Jubilee, Pilgrims of Hope.” (Pope Francis) The Jubilee began in Rome on the vigil of the Lord’s Nativity on 24th December 2024 with the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica, and in local dioceses on Holy Family Sunday on 29th December. It will conclude in local dioceses the following Holy Family Sunday on 28th December 2025, and in Rome on the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, 6th January 2026, with the closing of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica. Hallmarks of the Jubilee Jubilee Year is a sign of reconciliation because it establishes a “favourable time” for conversion. In 2 Corinthians 6:2, the apostle Paul says, “As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, “At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you.” Concretely, Reconciliation is about experiencing the sacrament of Reconciliation, taking advantage of this time to rediscover the value of confession, and personally receiving God’s word of forgiveness. Special graces for the forgiveness of the temporal punishment due for sins are made available during the Jubilee Year. The faithful may obtain a Jubilee indulgence – remission of all temporal punishment (time in Purgatory) for sin – by meeting the following conditions: • Pilgrimage to any of the designated churches and shrines • Going to confession • Celebration of the Eucharist • Profession of Faith • Prayers for the Intentions of the Holy Father. |
